                                       RE-CREATE

The 5 metre trunk of an enormous beech tree was carved with the help of local schools and the community. The tree had been of great importance in the community and the designs reflect the memories associated with it by local people.

Re-Create Project

Summer 2000

One old lady was proudly telling her granddaughter that she had climbed the tree when she was a girl.
An old man remembered doing his courting under the tree...
The movement of the figures up and down the trunk is also a cyclic process. So the small girl energetically begins her journey, the boy sits halfway, reflecting. The old man watches the flowers and remembers his dead wife who floats above him, her image is that of the young woman of their courting days.

So the design reflects these activities being both the memories of the people and of the tree itself.
